<p>PURPOSE: To provide a method and apparatus for accurately, easily and automatically forming composite pieces of various shapes from a composite sheet material. CONSTITUTION: A gripper 25 on a powered gantry 26 pulls a selected length of a composite sheet material 19 and its backing 20 from a supply roll 18 to cut them using a cutter 29. This is repeated to dispose a plurality of segments 12 on a belt 30. After marking is completed, a gantry 63 moves to dispose a protective film 61 over the segments 12. The powered gantry 64 having the cutter thereon is moved so that cutting blades being rotatable about a vertical axis cut composite pieces of desired shapes from the segments 12. Next the segments 12 are advanced to a separating device 180. Scrap is pulled downward and separated and the cut composite pieces, together with a bottom film 198, are wound around a roller 205.</p> |
