AUTOMATIC ADDRESS READING SYSTEM FOR POSTAL MATTER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic address reading system for postal matter constituted in such a manner that similar character patterns stating addresses are not repetitively rejected many times. SOLUTION: Input information (correct address codes) in video coding and recognition information (character pattern image data of rejected postal matter) are collected (step ST10). The contents of the dictionary (address knowledge data base) used for recognition of the addresses are complemented and updated in accordance with the information collected in such a manner (step ST12 to step ST22). The address knowledge data base complemented and updated (i.e., learned) in the contents is referenced, by which the addresses written on the postal matter are automatically recognized at a high correct answer rate.
