A clothes washing machine (2) adapted to limit excessive vibration during a spin drying cycle that includes a statically and dynamically-balanced assembly carried by at least three elastically deformable attachments (15, 16, 17) to a cabinet, the balanced assembly permitting plural degrees of freedom of movement relative to the cabinet including vertical movement resisted by frictional damping means (15, 16, 17); said balanced assembly including a perforated bowl (4) for containing washed clothes during spin drying about a vertical central axis, a washing tub (10) co-axially surrounding said perforated bowl (4), discrete masses (24, 32, 34) rigidly attached to said tub (10) including but not limited to principally a motor (24) to provide motive power during washing and spin drying cycles; and also principally including counterweight means (32, 34) to statically and dynamically balance about said central axis, said motor means (24) and all other said discrete masses (32, 34) incidentally forming part of said balanced assembly; said discrete masses (24, 32, 34) having centres of gravity arranged laterally and circumferentially relative to said central axis to provide for both said static balance and an inertial force which equally resists any force arising dynamically from spin drying which acts in any lateral direction tending to disturb equilibrium of said assembly in use.
