The device has a first immobilizing device which moves an immobilizing pinion towards an engaged position with the second immobilizing device, thus immobilizing the steering column. The device has an immobilizing pinion (10) which engages with a toothed wheel carried by the steering column to locate in a first immobilizing device (20). The pinion can move in translation along its axis (A1) w.r.t the pinion support (14). A second immobilizing device (22) is connected to the second end of the axis of the pinion and fixed axially with respect to the pinion support. To ensure the immobilization of the steering column the first immobilization device is moved axially with respect to the support pinion towards its engaged position against the pinion in such a way to move the pinion towards an engaged position with the second immobilizing device.
