The present invention relates to a slat chain conveyor comprising an endless slat chain (1), at least one shaft (5) and mounted concentrically thereon, guide disks (2) for supporting the slat chain (1), drive means for running the slat chain (1), and supplementary guide members for steering the path of the slat chain (1). According to the invention, at least one of said shafts (5) is supported on support members (6-14) comprising substantially parallel guide tracks adapted close to both ends of the shaft (5) for guiding the shaft (5) when the same is moved in a direction causing the tensioning or slackening of the slat chain (1), adjustment members (8, 9) adapted close to both ends of the shaft for moving the support points of the shaft (5) over a substantially equal length along each guide track, respectively, and locking means (8, 10) for locking the shaft (5) in place and respectively releasing the same.
