An improved polymeric optical fiber and method of manufacture including manufacture of flexible, cross-linked light transmitting core (LTC) of a higher refractive index by enhancing the surface of the LTC, modifying surface of the LTC and/or coating of the LTC with a lower refractive index material in a manner to render the surface of the LTC smoother than the surface of conventional LTC and/or to adhere a cladding to the LTC that is thin relative to conventional cladding.
