PURPOSE: A method for operating refrigerator is provided to achieve an improved reliability and convenience by storing normal operation cycle and operating refrigerator using the stored operation cycle upon occurrence of disconnection, short or failure. CONSTITUTION: A method comprises a step(S1-S4) of judging whether the freezing compartment temperature sensor is in normal operation, performing normal operation for the refrigerator if the sensor is in normal operation, and ending the refrigerator operation and alarming the sensor failure if the sensor is not in normal operation; a step(S5-S7) of accumulatively counting compressor "on" time period and "off" time period and storing the accumulatively counted time period, if the temperature of refrigerator has reached a selected notch temperature; a step(S8-S10) of performing defrost operation and calculating average compressor "on" time period(T1) and average compressor "off" time period(T2); a step(S11,S12) for accumulatively counting the time(T3) from the compressor "on" time to "off" time after the defrost operation has started; and a step(S20) of continuously performing normal operation of refrigerator if the freezing compartment temperature sensor is in normal operation, and operating the refrigerator in accordance with the frequency of operation cycle after starting of the defrost operation and the accumulatively counted time periods(T1,T2,T3), if the temperature sensor is not in normal operation.
