摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve travel stability by preventing racing of an engine speed of internal combustion engines, while ensuring turnout traveling performance upon abnormality in their electronic throttle system. SOLUTION: On detection of an abnormality in at least one of the components of the control system for internal combustion engines, which typically comprises accelerator opening sensors 22A and 22B, throttle opening sensors 16A and 16B, or a throttle valve 12, the upper limit value of the target throttle opening of the throttle valve 12 is set to the lower limit opening of the available range of actual throttle openings, and an actuator 20 is de- energized. In a turnout traveling mode after the fail-safe processing, if the engine speed reaches or exceeds a preselected level or higher, the number of cylinder cut-off is increased or all of the cylinders of the internal combustion engine are cut off. This step ensures the turnout traveling performance and suppresses increase in the output of the internal combustion engine, to thereby prevent improper vehicle behavior.
