PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To profitably obtain the subject compound in high selectivity and in high purity by allowing a specific dimethanol compound to react with a specified phenol compound under specific conditions and subsequently adding a hydroxide and water to the reaction product. SOLUTION: This method for producing a trinuclear phenol component of formula III comprises allowing (A) a dimethylol compound of formula I [R<1> -R<3> are each H, OH, a halogen or a (cyclo)alkyl] (e.g. 2,6-dihydroxymethyl-1- methylphenol) to react with (B) a phenol compound of formula II (R<4> -R<7> are each R<1> ) in an amount of 2-10 moles based on that of the component A in the presence of (C) an acid catalyst in an amount of 0.01-1 mole based on that of the component A in (D) a solvent containing an alcohol (e.g. a mixture solvent of methanol with water), adding (E) a hydroxide (e.g. sodium hydroxide) and (F) water to the reaction mass to deposit the product as crystals, and subsequently taking out the crystals. |
