PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a high speed shutter operation, meanwhile, to make good use of the function of an imaging device, as for an electronic camera with a built-in focal plane shutter. SOLUTION: The electronic camera 10 includes photographing lens systems 21 and 23, the imaging device 30, the focal plane shutter 25 with a front curtain 26 and a rear curtain 27, and control parts 35 and 61. First of all, a set up state where incident light is not shielded by the front curtain 26 and the rear curtain 27 is set by the control parts 35 and 61. At releasing the shutter at a high speed, a ready state where the incident light is shielded by the front curtain 26, but, not shielded by the rear curtain 27 is set, and the imaging device 30 is turned on, thereafter, by starting a front curtain 26 opening operation, the exposure is started. On the other hand, at releasing the shutter at a low speed, the exposure is started by turning on the imaging device 10 in the set up state, without setting the ready state.
