PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous coating material which gives a coating film curable to a gel fraction of 5 wt.% or higher at such a low temperature as 100 deg.C or lower and can hide minute irregularity, if any, on a surface to be coated, enabling a smooth coated surface to be obtained. SOLUTION: This aqueous coating material contains (a) hydroxy-group- containing resin, (b) a melamine resin, (c) a keto-group-containing resin, and (d) a compound having a hydrazide or semicarbazide group. Based on the sum of solid contents of resins (a) and (b), a suitable content of resin (a) is 50-90 wt.% and that of resin (b) is 50-10 wt.%. A suitable ratio of resin (c) to compound (d) is such that the equivalent ratio of keto group of resin (c) to hydrazide or semicarbazide group of compound (d) is (1/0.1)-(1/0.2). The sum of solid contents of resin (c) and compound (d) is preferably 50-300 pts.wt. provided that the sum of solid contents of resins (a) and (b) is 100 pts.wt.
