PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent engine stop from being induced in an engine during operation so as not to give sudden torque change in the reverse direction to the rotating direction of the engine by restraining a shift load to suddenly increase, at shift changeover operation to backward in the shift mechanism of an outboard engine. SOLUTION: This shift mechanism 13 of an outboard engine is constituted so that a shift cam 16 is formed with a first cam face 16 a for moving a dog clutch 20 and a second cam face 16b for pressing a propeller shaft 14, sub-clutch parts 14c, 26, 23c capable of transmitting torque by friction force are formed between propeller shaft 14 and a backward gear 23, and by rotational movement of the shift cam 16 at shift changeover to the backward, prior to the movement of the dog clutch 20 by the first cam face 16a of the shift cam 16, by pressing the propeller shaft 14 by the second cam face 16b of the shift cam 16, torque is transmitted from the backward gear 23 to the propeller shaft 14 by the sub- clutch parts 14c, 26, 23c. |
