The present invention comprises a bioprocess for converting aliphatic compounds, of the form CH3(CH2)nCH3 where n = 4 to 20, to monoterminal and diterminal carboxylates using genetically-engineered organisms. This invention relates to a process for expressing alkane hydroxylating activity in genetically-engineered yeasts Pichia pastoris and Candida maltosa. In addition, the present invention describes a process to produce genetically transformed Candida maltosa strains that have enhanced cytochrome P450 activity and/or gene disruptions in the beta -oxidation pathway.
