<p>The invention concerns a method and a device for diagnosing the operation of a catalytic element (5) of an internal combustion engine exhaust line (1) characterized in that it consists in comparing a reference value output by a first oxygen probe (S1) arranged upstream of a catalytic element (2), to a value measured continuously when the vehicle is running by a second oxygen probe (S2) arranged downstream of the catalytic element (2).
