<p>The present process for preparing saturated alcohols comprises an aldol condensation of alkyl methyl ketones which have 6-8 carbon atoms and are branched at the .beta.-carbon atom with aldehydes which have 4-15 carbon atoms and are branched at the .alpha.-carbon atom to form .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated ketones and subsequent hydrogenation of the .alpha., .beta.-unsaturated ketones to give alcohols, wherein the aldol condensation is carried out at a temperature of 60-130.degree.C in the presence of a 30-55% strength aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide. The process displays very low by-product formation.</p> |
