This positive electrode active material for lithium secondary batteries has a ratio of the crystallite size α at a peak within the range of 2θ = 18.7 ± 1° to the crystallite size β at a peak within the range of 2θ = 44.4 ± 1°, namely α/β of from 1.60 to 2.40 (inclusive) in powder X-ray diffractometry using a Cu-Kα ray, and has an α-NaFeO2 type crystal structure represented by composition formula (I). Li[Lix(NiaCobMncMd)1-x]O2 (I) (In the formula, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1, 0.7 < a < 1, 0 < b < 0.2, 0 ≤ c < 0.2, 0 < d < 0.1, a + b + c + d = 1, and M represents Fe or the like.)
