Flexible magnetic recording discs are usually contained in a sleeve, which has two apertures, one for the drive mechanism and one for the magnetic head. The drive mechanism usually clamps onto the hole in the centre of the disc and relies on friction and centrifugal force to hold the disc in the right position as it rotates at high speed. This is not a satisfactory arrangement for very small diameter discs, and an alternative drive system is available. The disc is clamped at its centre to a boss which is free to rotate inside the protective sleeve.
