The mechanism to splice a broken yarn in an open-end spinning unit, has a system to twist the yarn round its longitudinal axis while the end is opened out as it is reversed into the spinning chamber. The clamping sections of the yarn reversing mechanism have a rotary drive which turns against the direction in which the yarn was spun. The clamping section nearest to the yarn winding station is rotated at a slower speed than the other section. A rotating abrasive cylinder is used to open out the broken yarn end, rotating on an axis across the axis of the yarn being spliced, with grooves running round its circumference, in a spiral. The position of the abrasive cylinder can be adjusted through a swing arm mounting to place it at the end of the broken yarn in a reciprocating motion between the clamping sections. The system ensures that the fringed end of the broken yarn remains symmetrical as it is returned into the spinning chamber to be spliced with the end of the newly-spun yarn.
