The protection of a jet of molten metal flowing into a vessel involves maintaining at the moving metal surface an envelope of gas moving with the liquid and being constantly renewed. The gas flows into the vessel with the jet and leaves the vessel through a cover having an opening formed by a raised nozzle which directs the gas upwards towards the origin of the jet, the vessel having supply orifices for the initial injection of the gas into the vessel. The nozzle is of frusto-conical form tapering upwardly and the metal jet passes through the nozzle, there being means on the cover for supplying and distributing the gas to the nozzle.
