PURPOSE:To prepare phloroglucin in high yield, by reacting an oxidation reaction product obtained by oxidizing 1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene with H2O2 in an organic solvent in the presence of an acidic catalyst in the heterogeneous reaction system, and decomposing the resultant reaction product with an acid. CONSTITUTION:An oxidation reaction product, obtained by oxidizing 1,3,5- triisopropylbenzene, and containing at least one carbinol compound selected from carbinol dihydroperoxide, dicarbinol hydroperoxide and tricarbinol is reacted with hydrogen peroxide, preferably in a concentration of suitably 10-50wt%, in an equivalent amount of 1.5-10 times that of the carbinol groups in the carbinol compound in an organic solvent inert to the H2O2, and capable of dissolving the oxidation reaction product, e.g. dichloroethylene or isopropyl ether, in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g. phosphoric acid or perchloric acid, in the heterogeneous reaction system, and the resultant reaction product is then decomposed with an acid to afford phloroglucin.
