PURPOSE:To carry out comfortable running by selecting a maximum power running mode if the throttle opening degree or the variation rate thereof exceeds a predetermined value, but a best fuel consumption running mode if the throttle opening degree or the acceleration becomes below a predetermined value after a predetermined time elapsing. CONSTITUTION:An engine control unit 108 detects an acceleration demand if at least either one of the throttle opening degree detected by a sensor 118 and the variation rate thereof exceeds a predetermined value, and shifts the running mode into a maximum power running mode (power mode). After a predetermined time elapsing, the control unit 108 determines that the acceleration demand should be reset when at least either one of the throttle opening degree and the acceleration calculated from a signal from a vehicle speed sensor 121 becomes below a predetermined value, and returns the running mode into a best fuel consumption running mode (economy mode). Thus, a suitable running mode is automatically selected only by manipulating an accelerator, thereby it is possible to enhance the accelerating performance and as well to enjoy comfortable running.
