<p>A continuously operating composting silo for sewage sludge comprises a number of sludge tanks one above another, all permeable to air and continuously ventilated. The sludge is introduced into the uppermost tank and each tank is discharged to the tank below at intervals of several days, so that the sludge advances progressively downwards, to be discharged finally from the lowest tank. Each tank is cylindrical and is divided by internal partitions extending right down to the tank base into a number of separate cells. The base of the tank can be rotated relative to the walls and partitions and comprises apertures so that, as each base is rotated through a full circle, all the cells of the tank above are completely discharged into the tank below. The mechanism for discharging each tank into the one below is extremely simple, and does not require the use of hinged flaps or the like. This renders the plant economical and enables it to be used for relatively small sewage systems.</p> |
