The present invention relates to coverings and devices for protecting pools, such as swimming pools, by means of an inflatable envelope. The envelope consists of two flexible sheets which are connected at their perimeter (3) by any known means providing airtight sealing, each of these sheets being isothermal, of a maximum weight of 550 g/m<2>, having a very considerable tear strength, and being opaque with a minimum reflection coefficient of 75% of solar radiation, which envelope (2) has a larger surface area than that of the pool and is fixed continuously on its periphery all around the said pool (4) in a profile (6) which provides sealing between the outer air and the air enclosed under the envelope between the surface (1) of the said pool (4) and the lower sheet (22) of the envelope. <IMAGE>
