PURPOSE:To provide a hydrocarbon traction drive device fluid containing bicyclooctane skeletons, having a low viscosity and exhibiting an excellent performance stably over a wide temperature range from low temperature to high temperature. CONSTITUTION:A fluid for hydrocarbon traction drive devices contains a bicyclooctane or bicyclooctene compound of formula I (R<1>-R<3> are 1-5C alkylene or 2-5C alkenylene which may have a substituent, the sum of carbon atoms in R<1>-R<3> excluding the substituent being 6; R<4>, R<5> and the substituent are 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl, 1-4C alkylidene, OH, H, halogen; the number of all carbon atoms is 8-11), the dimerized product thereof, the hydrogenation product of the dimerized product or the hydrogenated product of a Friedel Crafts reaction product. The hydrogenation product of the dimerized product of the compound of formula I with a bicycloheptane compound or bicyloheptene compound of formula II (R<6>-R<8> are R<1>-R<3>, the total number of carbon atoms excluding substituents in R<1>-R<3> being 5; R<9>-R<10> are R<4>-R<5>; the total number of carbon atoms is 7-14) or a 5-14C hydrocarbon is also used as the fluid for traction drive devices having the same performance. |
