PURPOSE:To reduce the time required for oil-water separation and to obtain a high-quality petroleum resin having a lowered residual ash content, by adding a specific polymer during the washing of a liquid reaction mixture resulting from a polymerization conducted in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A polymer represented by the formula (wherein R1 is a 4-16C alkyl; R2 is H or CH3; X is H, an alkyl, or aminomethyl; n is 0-8; and m is 8-20) and having a hydroxyl valve of 40-120mgKOH/g is added to a liquid reaction mixture (a) resulting from a polymerization conducted in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, at the time when the mixture (a) is treated with water or an aqueous alkali solution. The amount of the polymer is 1-200ppm of the mixture (a). The polymer added inhibits the formation of scum or emulsion, so that the settling time necessary for oil-water separation can be reduced and a petroleum resin having a lower ash content and a lighter shade than conventional ones can be produced. Thus, the production efficiency can be heightened and the production of a high-quality petroleum resin with high commercial value is made possible. |
