PURPOSE:To obtain the subject sintered compact having excellent strength and toughness and suitable for practical use by incorporating a specific amount of silica as the third substance in a rare-earth metal oxide-alumina sintered compact thereby decreasing the crystal particle diameter of the sintered compact below a specific level. CONSTITUTION:The objective rare-earth oxide-alumina-silica sintered compact having crystal particle diameter of <=30mum and free from the generation of defects such as void and pore and the abnormal particle growth can be produced by forming a mixture of 5-95wt.% of rare-earth metal oxide such as Sc2O3, Y2O3 and La2O3, 94.9-4.9wt.% of alumina and 0.1-10wt.% of silica, heating the mixture at a heating rate of 1-200 deg.C/min and keeping at 1400-2000 deg.C for 0.1-24hr. The sintered compact is e.g. a mixture of 99.9-90wt.% of a sintered compact composed mainly of Ln4Al2O9 or LnAlO3 (Ln is rare-earth element or their mixture) and 0.1-10wt.% of silica. |
