The weight of liquid remaining on the upper surface of a tipping plate after discharge of a flush of liquid causes the plate to change position, diverting the next flush of liquid in the other direction. The liquid feed (5) flows onto the upper surface of the tipping plate (14) and is diverted to one side of it (10 as shown). When the liquid feed strops some liquid is trapped on the upper surface of the tipper by vertical dividers (17,18 and 19). This drains out of some compartments via small drain holes (24) until liquid remains only in the upper compartment (21) so the tipper changes position and diverts the next water flow in the other direction.
