The method involves using at least one catalyser (14) in the exhaust gas system which is pre-heated by introducing secondary air into the exhaust gas and/or by heating electrically. The pre-heating process is adapted to the state of ageing of the catalyser. It is intensified as the age of the catalyser increases and is controlled according to the temp. (TK) downstream of the catalyser. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for vehicle. Achieves further improvement in exhaust gas decontamination at low additional cost.
