Fecal material in the tanks of mobile toilets is treated by adding a concentrate to convert H2S, ammonia and urea to ammonium salts and other non-toxic reaction products. Treatment of feces in the tanks of mobile toilets is treated by involves adding a concentrate to convert H2S, ammonia and urea to ammonium salts and other non-toxic reaction products, the added water-soluble salts reacting with H2S to give insoluble sulfides plus acid and this acid then reacting with the ammonia and urea to give ammonium salts. To prevent discoloration of the toilet the unstable salts in the concentrate are chemically stabilized e.g. by double salt formation and/or by temporary immobilization by reduction of the reactive surface and/or by encapsulation with a protective layer which decomposes in the tank. Alternatively, the concentrate can be packaged in a material showing delayed dissolution or decomposition in water.
