PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition with less irritation to the skin, etc., excellent in foaming properties, capable of adjusting the affinity for water and organic solvents and useful as a base for cosmetics, a detergent, an emulsifying agent, a conditioning agent, etc., and to provide a method for efficiently synthesizing the composition. SOLUTION: This composition with less irritation to the skin, etc., excellent in foaming properties and capable of adjusting the affinity for the water and organic solvents is obtained by formulating plural diamine-based amino acid derivatives or salts thereof. The method for synthesizing the amino acid derivative or the salt thereof improved in solubility of the amino acid insoluble in the organic solvents without advancing an acylating reaction in a polar organic solvent in good yield comprises adding an excessive amount of a fatty acid halide to the amino acid in the presence of a basic substance and the polar organic solvent.
