PURPOSE:To speed up pattern recognition by defining a template consisting of a density image corresponding to a pattern or object to be recognized, scanning the picture elements of the input density image one by one by the template and executing the operation for the sum of products of the input density image based on the template. CONSTITUTION:An input image 1 is constituted of picture elements xij (i=1-N and j=1-M). In this case, i=1-N is a picture element discriminating subscript in the lateral direction along a scanning line and j=1-M is a scanning line discriminating subscript directed from the vertical direction of a picture plane in the down direction. If the template 3 is constituted of picture elements wij, the arithmetic for the sum of products can be executed based on the shown equality. The template 3 is the set of picture elements expressed by wkl (k=1-n, l=1-m) based on the expression, the sum of products between a local image 4 and the template 3 is found out by the expression and the result yij is stored in a local image representative point storing position 5 in an output image 6.
