PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the collision magnitude of a vehicle in a short time after a collision by detecting a collision speed from the change of detected acceleration with the lapse of time, and detecting the collision magnitude from the time difference between the time until the collision speed reaches a first set value after the collision is detected and the time until the collision speed reaches a second set value. SOLUTION: This air bag device 4 deploys an air bag 5 with four inflators 6-9. When a vehicle 1 collides, acceleration is detected by an acceleration sensor 2, and a collision speed is calculated by a control unit 3 from the change of the detected acceleration with the lapse of time. The inflators 6-9 are operated by the control unit 3 in response to the size of the collision speed. The control unit 3 feeds the current from a battery 1 to the igniters of the inflators 6-9. The control unit 3 controls the number of the inflators 6-9 to be operated in response to the collision speed. The collision speed can be detected in a short time after a collision even if the collision speed is large. |
