The invention relates to a rear view mirror device for a motor vehicle (2), which rear view mirror device comprises a mirror element (10) and an adjustment unit (11) connected to the mirror element (10) for transferring the mirror element (10) from a normal position to a monitoring position. In the monitoring position, a dead angle area (15) of the normal position is visible. According to the invention, the rear view mirror device (1) comprises a proximity sensor (12) and an activating element (13), wherein the activating element (13) is configured for activating the proximity sensor (12) and the adjustment unit (11) during a turning operation. By means of the adjusted mirror element (10) and of the activated proximity sensor (12), traffic participants (3) can be observed outside the normal field of view. The invention lowers the risk for the vehicle driver to overlook cyclists or pedestrians when turning. |
