In an electrolytic cell, the solvent for the electrolytic salts is tetrahydrofurane alone or in admixture with up to 50% by volume of a lower aliphatic alcohol or up to 5% by volume of water. Specified positive electrodes consist of silver or a silver compound (e.g. the oxide or chloride), manganese dioxide, mercury oxide, bismuth oxide, vanadium pentoxide and nickel oxide, the preferred positive electrode being made by pressing a mixture of silver chloride or silver oxide, silver powder and zinc chloride with fine mesh nickel wire and then dissolving out the zinc chloride. Specified negative electrodes consist of zinc or zinc oxide, magnesium, cadmium, tin and aluminium. Specified electrolytic salts are zinc chloride, tin (II) chloride, aluminium chloride, phosphorus pentachloride, halides of the alkali and alkaline earth metals and magnesium, alkali metal acetates and aniline acetate. The cells may be operated in the gastight state. |
