A workpiece 1, such as a continuous casting, is reduced by a pair of rolls 10, at least one of which is moved by actuators 4 and 5 under the control of a data-processing system 28. Movements of the or each roll are sensed electrically, mechanically, or hydraulically and are compared with a reference, such as a rotating magnetic tape. Resultant signals are fed to a unit 27 for controlling the movement of the rolls by actuators 4 and 5. The actuators, which are pivoted to a pair of frames 2, may be controlled hydraulically or by electric linear motors. Several pairs of rolls may be provided in a plane at right angles to that shown. |
