<p>Gas discharge surge arrester, uses a gas-filled housing, pref. employing a noble gas. In the housing are two electrodes; and the working end of at least one electrode is coated with a mixt. applied as a paste. The coating contains metal; has high electron emission; and contains at least one semiconducting metal cpd. (1). Cpd. (1) is pref. n-type, and is selected from either (a) the oxides, nitrides, and/or sulphides of Ba, Sr, Ca, Ti, Zr, Hf, Bi, Zn, V, Fe, or their mixts.; or (b) the oxides of Cu, Ni, Mn, Mg, Al, Si, Th, B, or their mixts. The esp. pref. coating contains 0.2-60 wt.% BaO, partic. 5% BaO with grain size 0.2-60 mu m. High response speed to low surge voltages, and long working life during which the electrical properties of the device remain constant, provide the paste is pref. applied using an inert liq., esp. alcohol or dibromoethane.</p> |
