Prepn. comprises reacting ethylene with chlorine in a liq. phase contg. 1,2-dichloroethane at a temp. enabling the upper liq. phase to boil in the presence of a metal chloride. At least 0.001 wt.% benzene and/or benzene chloride is added to the reaction medium to avoid side reactions. (I) is industrially and economically obtd. by control of the prodn. of the by-product, 1,1,2-trichloroethane at high temp. In an example into steel reactor was supplied 1,2-dichloroethane, Cl2 gas and ethylene were introduced continuously each in 20 N m3/hr. Benzene (85 g/hr) was supplied continuously as a side reaction inhibitor. During the reaction ferric chloride (50-200 ppm) was detected. Ethylene (1.3 kg/cm2G) was kept at 100-110 deg.C in the liq. phase. 1,2-Dichloroethane was refluxed and uncondensed gas was discharged at 30-40 deg.C as waste gas. Liq. taken out of the bottom of the reactor contained 1,2-dichloroethane 99.22 wt.%, 1,1,2-trichloroethane 0.47, ethyl chloride 0.01, benzene chlorides (total amount) 0.26, benzene 0.002, and others 0.04. |
