Protective paste, comprises: (a) as base, a mixt. of glycerine with oleic, stearic and palmitic acids; (b) amorphous phosphorous and/or magnesium as illuminating agent; and (c) iron oxide and/or magnesium for eliminating hydrogen. The paste is useful in underwater arc welding by the wet method (unrestricted access of water). The paste forms an electrically conductive environment to facilitate arc ignition and burning, burns to form a protective gas atmos., forms a slag layer to reduce the cooling rate of the weld metal, and provides heat to improve melting rate and penetration. |
