The design of the microwave frequency generator allows field energies in excess of 1000 keV to be attained which is significantly in excess of the relatively limited values obtainable in present generators. The generator employs a variable wave-delay section so that values of the propagation constant, K, greater than w/c can be obtained. Electrons are accelerated from a circular cathode (10) through a Pierce electrode (12) to a circular-aperture anode (14) working at a potential of 10 kV. The beam (1) enters a variable-section wave guide (20) which is fed by a high frequency generator (7) when is oscillating at the cyclotron frequency (fe) of the electrons in the system. The wave guide is followed by a wave-retarder (15) which has circular tapping rings (16) of thickness (P) increasing in the direction of the electron beam. Energy is extracted from a load (8) at the end of the delay section at a frequency which is a multiple of fc. The design of the tapping rings forms the propagation of some wave modes (including the Te11) whilst suppressing others.
|
