The appts. consists of two electrode type pick-ups (11,12) connected to the patient (10) and to an oscillator (100) and detector/amplifier circuit (200) by two wires (13,14). Cardio-electric signals representing heart beats and impedance variations representing respiration are amplified in the detector/amplifier circuit whose output is connected to a filter (300) of electrocardiac signals and to a filter (400) of respiration. The output from the first filter is a unique signal for each heart beat signal detected and this is received by a first rhythm detection circuit (500) which produces a first rhythm signal representing the rhythm of reception. Similarly the output from the second filter is a unique signal for each respiration signal detected and this is received by a second rhythm detection circuit (600) which produces a second rhythm signal representing the rhythm of reception. A comparator circuit (800) receives the first and second rhythm signals and produces a warning signal of apnoea when the first and second rhythm signals are equal within predetermined limits.
