The unit has a cover (1), which is restrained by a joint hinge (3), fastened to the vehicle body. When the airbag retainer has not been triggered, the joint hinge passes between retainer and cover to an exit point or a fastening point on the cover. Seen in longitudinal vehicle direction, the fastening point is located on a part (12) of the cover further away from the windscreen (10), and on the cover side away from the vehicle interior. The cover is located in the steering wheel or in the dashboard (2) and the retainer unit is an airbag module (4) behind it.
