Certain substituted benzoic acids, e.g. (thio)salicylic acid, acetylsalicylic acid can be used as deactivators in cobalt-based catalytic systems used in the synthesis of syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadienes in aqueous solution. A stabilized syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene (SPBD) composition contains syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene and a substituted benzoic acid of formula (I). R<1> = -OH, -S(=)OH, or -OC-R<6>; R<6> = 1-12C alkyl; and R<2>-R<5> = H or 1-12C alkyl. An Independent claim is included for the preparation and deactivation of syndiotactic 1,2-polybutadiene involving (1) polymerization, e.g. suspension polymerization, of 1,3-butadiene in aqueous medium in the presence of a catalyst system, which includes (a) a transition metal compound, (b) an organoaluminum compound, and (c) at least one member from the group CS2, phenylisothiocyanate and xanthogenic acid, in order to obtain an aqueous medium containing 1,2-polybutadiene; and (2) addition of a substituted benzoic acid to the aqueous medium in order to deactivate the catalyst.
