The method involves evaluating a coated surface or the surface of a coating material optically. The optical evaluation preferably includes a gloss measurement, in which light is shone from a radiation source onto the surface to be evaluated and the intensity of the reflection is measured. The intensity of the reflection may be measured as an intensity distribution as a function of different reflection angles. The intensity of the reflection may be measured at different reflection angles with the same final beam angle.
