<p>The Raman fibre laser includes a length of optical fibre which includes an intracavity section of length L positioned between an input section and an output section. The input section and output section each includes fibre Bragg gratings with centre wavelengths lambda 1, lambda 2... lambda n, where n>=2 and lambda 1lambda 2... lambda n. In the input section the fibre, Bragg gratings of centre wavelengths lambda 1, lambda 2... lambda n are positioned in sequence according to centre wavelength. The centre wavelength increases with increasing distance from the intracavity section. In the output section the fibre Bragg gratings of centre wavelengths lambda 1, lambda 2... lambda n-1 are positioned in sequence according to centre wavelength.
