A soft web material (52) comprises first regions (60) some of which extend in one direction and some in another orthogonal direction to intersect each other and forming a border surrounding second regions (66) of the same material forming raised rib-like elements. When the material is stretched the first regions undergo molecular level and geometric distortion and the second regions undergo initially a geometric deformation.
