The method involves actuating the gear change mechanism (103-108) with a controlled actuator (102), whereby an operating element (109) traverses a path depending on the operation of the actuator. A displacement parameter is detected, a demand value for the path formed and the actuator controlled during at least a first phase of the change process so that the detected displacement adopts the value of the demanded displacement. At least one reaction parameter is detected representing the reaction of the gearbox and/or change mechanism and/or actuator in response to operation of the actuator and the demand parameter generated depending on the reaction parameter of at least one preceding change process. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for controlling a change mechanism for an automated manual gearbox.
