PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fluorescent character display device having a compound structure consisting of a VFD structure and a CL structure, and having a uniform and excellent display quality. SOLUTION: A gap G11 between a cathode 6-1 and an anode 5-1 on a VFD structure side is set equal to a gap G12 between a cathode 6-2 and an anode 5-2 on a CL structure side. A gap G21 between a grid 7-1 and the anode 5-1 on the VFD structure side is set equal to a gap G22 between a grid 7-2 and the anode 5-2 on the CL structure side.
