PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that monitors a state of an exposure lamp in the midst of original reading in the case other than a shading operation so as to cope with a fault. SOLUTION: In the case that originals are continuously carried by a sheet- through type automatic draft feeder, shading is executed for a 1st original to monitor an exposed lamp luminous quantity and even when no shading is performed for 2nd and succeeding originals, the exposed lamp luminous quantity is monitored and on the occurrence of a fault, an FGATE signal to capture original data is produced on the occurrence of the fault. Furthermore, shading data are updated only when the reference white board is read.
