An antenna array includes transmitting elements (12). Each element (12) has an amplifier (14) adjacent to it. This arrangement means that there is very little loss in the relatively short connection between the amplifier and the transmitting element. This enables the use of relatively cheap low power amplifiers. The antenna array can include receiving elements (30), which are connected to a single low noise amplifier (140) or each receiving element can be connected to its own low noise amplifier.
