Fluidized bed combustor or gasifier including a combustion chamber(s) (12) with a polygonal horizontal cross section. The chamber (12) may have a trapezoidal or semicircular cross section, or may have five or more side walls (22,24,26,28) of at least two different lengths. The walls of the combustion chamber may be water tube panels. An external pressure vessel (18) surrounds the combustion chamber(s) and associated particle separator(s) (14;16), and may be spherical or cylindrical.
